While I am saddened to admit that I wasn’t my son’s first “girlfriend”, I am happy to report that I have held that title for close to 3 years now. I am cherishing this time because it won’t last forever. I am acutely aware that the day will come that he will actually have a real girlfriend and then he is done with me (Lord help me!).
My little man is in Kindergarten so I figured I had time before I had to worry…I was wrong. A couple of months ago, I picked my babies up from school and he told me he had asked a girl in his class to marry him. As my heart sank, I proceeded to ask him questions to get the whole story and this is basically what he said:
I asked her to marry me and she said “yes” but we can only have 1 kid
She Said Yes.
They can only have 1 kid.
What was happening?
As we walked to the car, I explained that he was too young for a girlfriend (even though I knew they really weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend, I just wanted to set the stage for future discussions). He then went on to say that he already had a girlfriend and then he looked up at me.
My heart melted. Even more so when he gave me that beautiful smile of his.
I knew he was still my little man. I also knew that this was just the beginning…Lord, help me!
Keeping in mind that was a couple of months ago, fast forward to yesterday (which I know it sounds weird) and this conversation happened:
Little Man: M gave me a kiss on the cheek with lip balm. I’m going to Marry her.
My friend K and I were fighting about who is going to marry her.
Me: What about G?
Little Man: I don’t like her anymore, we are friends. I’m going to marry M.
He then went on to say how it was the best day because of M and that he was so happy he was going to marry her.
See! I was right!!! This is only the beginning…Lord help me!
