While we should always take sun safety precautions, it is especially true during the summer.
After all, summer time means spending time outside enjoying the beautiful weather…maybe going to the pool, beach, the park, going on picnics or just running around outside. No matter what you’re doing outdoors, you should definitely take sun exposure precautions.
That being said, here are 4 Ways To Protect Your Skin From The Sun
Wear Sunblock
- Make sure your sunblock has an SPF of least 30.
- Apply sunblock to your skin at least 15 minutes before sun exposure.
- Be sure to reapply sunblock every 2 hours or after you have gone swimming.
- Be mindful of the expiration date. Yes, sunblock does expire.

Use Sunglasses…your eyes need protection too!
- They protect your eyes and the sensitive skin under your eyes from UV rays
- Try to use sunglasses that block both UVA & UVB rays offer the best protection.
Wear a Hat
- Use a hat that has a wide enough brim that covers your entire face and neck.
Limit sun exposure and/or find some shade
- Limit sun exposure between peak hours 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- Give your body a break from the rays and try to find some shade (even if for a little bit)
Do You Know of Anymore Ways To Protect Your Skin From The Sun? I’d love to add it to the list?
I burn easily so this is good advice.

I was diagnosed with stage 1 malignant melanoma when I was only 21! Thank you for sharing this so that hopefully other’s will protect their skin and prevent another young woman from getting the same diagnosis!
wow…so young. Glad that you are ok now
Thanks, Leanette! I was INCREDIBLY LUCKY to have caught it in time A much younger, very fair skinned co-worker of mine came back from the beach last week burnt to a crisp. When I showed her the 3 inch scar on my leg from the removed malignancy, she vowed to always wear sunscreen from now on!
That’s great that it was caught early on…at least your story will help others
Great info to know!
I love to swim. Don’t like the sun. I swim in an indoor pool.
these are some great tips for surviving the hot, sunny summer days.i burn easily so i wait to do my yard work and stuff until later in the day like 6pm
Thank you for the tips. I make sure my family is always wearing sunscreen when we will be out in the sun. My husband and daughter burn very easily.
Thank you for sharing these tips to stay protected from the sun.
One thing I have never gotten used to; wearing sunglasses. For some reason I can’t do it, it just seems too dark and I can never find sunglasses that look good on me. My kids tease me because my mom told them how I used to lay out on a piece of tinfoil and rub Crisco all over my body. The sad thing is, it’s all true. Boy, how times have changed.
I never used to wear sunglasses and now I can’t seem to be without them.
My mom used to mix iodine and baby oil for a tan…things have changed. 🙂
Such great tips!! We spend a lot of time out doors here in southern cali but we use sunblock and also if the boys start looking red I put a shirt on them if we are swimming 🙂 great tips
I’m always good about applying sunscreen at the beginning of the day…but I never remember to reapply. Thanks for the reminder!
It’s important to wear sun glasses. I’ve heard horror stories about people that burn their retina.
I’m just now coming to appreciate hats. Even if they look dorky on me, they sure keep my ears from burning!
New research has started to lean towards the idea that sunburns and sun exposure do not cause skincancer and sunscreen may do more harm than good.
interesting….
I also find that very interesting… I’m going to need to see those journal articles before I start skipping my daily SPF!
absolutely…
do you have to reapply even i it’s waterproof?
I definitely would. I’d rather be safe than sorry.
All great tips if planning to go out to the beach or spending the day in the sun. However, I have to agree with Angela. I’m not sure about the skin cancer connection with sun exposure but I have heard that too much sun screen use can block out the much needed vitamin D we all need and get from sun exposure. I have read that one should sit in the sun unprotected for the first 10 minutes and then add your sun screen.
Thanks so much for your useful tips everybody, when the suns out I never leave home without my sunscreen and yes even when it says waterproof,it’s still best to reapply.better safe then sorry
I wanted to add one quick tip. I find it super-hard to use sunscreen on the face because it always seems to get into my eyes and make them sting. I’ve found, however, that the sunscreen that comes in a stick (specifically for face application) seems to avoid this problem most of the time. It probably doesn’t mix with makeup very well, but if you’re going to be at the beach or pool, then it’s worth it.
Great tip – thanks 🙂
thanks for such awesome tips. i like to wear my sunglasses when i’m out in the sun as it helps protect the eye from harmful sunrays. i too wear sunblock moisturizer from Eucerin which is really helpful to my skin.
I have to be very careful when exposed to the sun. I burn easily and is really bad. I am always applying sunblock and wearing a hat. This summer, I have out out in the sun a lot and thank God I have tanned a lil not burned.
I never go out without my sunscreen hat or sunglasses.
I am allergic to most sun blocks so I have to be very careful.
I also have celiacs so I have come down with The Rash, and be
on special medication on my legs~it is a pain in the You Know
What!!! 🙁 🙁
Those of us who live in Florida tend to forget that we should be taking these precautions on a daily basis — especially those of us who live close to beaches! Thank you for the great tips! 🙂
A helpful set of tips to stay safe in the sun! I need to remember to wear sunglasses more consistently.
We need all the helpful tips we can get! Great ones here and thanks for posting! My husband and children are so light skinned that they burn SUPER fast and easy. It’s always a rough start to the summer 🙁
