So the big day is here!  No, I’m not referring to pay day (although that is great), I am referring to Oz the Great & Powerful finally being in theaters.  Today is the day that you and your family can head on out to see this amazing movie.  By now you know that I was able to see this movie in Feb when I attended its red carpet premiere in LA at the El Capitan Theater (If you didn’t know, where have you been? LOL). While that experience was surreal, I have been wanting to share my thoughts about the film for almost a month now.  So here I go….

I really enjoyed this movie!  The story was well written and they did an excellent job of bringing it to life on screen with vivid color and an incredible imagination (oh yeah, seeing it in 3D helped as well).  I get the feeling that I would have a blast in Oz (if it were real and if there was no wicked witch messing everything up of course).

What This Movie Is About

When Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora, Evanora and Glinda, who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.

How it Relates to the Wizard of Oz

Whether or not you have seen the Wizard of Oz you can still see this film because it is actually a Prequel to that movie and it tells the story of how Oscar (Oz) got there and how he became the Wizard of Oz.  Talk about pressure for the director, Sam Raimi! (You can read about his thoughts on that HERE).  They did an incredible job of adding some details from The Wizard of Oz into Oz The Great & Powerful so that you could see the connection of the 2 films without taking away from The Wizard of Oz. One detail both movies shared was the winding yellow brick road. I won’t say anymore, lets see what you notice.  Feel free to comment with any you find because there are quite a few of them.

About the characters

They have such an amazing, all-star cast (all of which we were able to interview…you can click on their names to read their interviews)

All of the actors did such a great job with their characters (and had a lot of fun with it too). Each one made their character magical yet very human at the same time.  I am impressed by how you can relate to some of the characteristics of a flying monkey while also relating to a china doll.  I also love how some of the characters have multiple layers to them and they are neither good nor bad if you look beyond some of the things they do…People can change, there is hope for all of us.

Check out Joey (China Girl & Zach (Finley) as they interview each other about the film in this funny video below

Is this a Family film?

Absolutely! But here’s my disclaimer, it all depends on your child. My 6 year old daughter may be a little frightened certain parts (because after all there’s an evil witch and angry baboons) but she would be amazed by all the other parts of the movie.  While my 4 year old son probably wouldn’t even flinch.  Each child is different and you know them best.

It’s now in theaters.  So what are you waiting for? Discover for yourself, which witch is which!!!!
