When it comes to movies that catch my eye, I tend to lean towards action flicks and romantic comedies (I should also add any movie my kids make me watch as well). That being the case, The Hundred-Foot Journey is one that may have fallen under my radar but I am so glad it didn’t! During my most recent trip to LA, I had the chance to screen DreamWorks Pictures’ The Hundred-Foot Journey before chatting with one of its main characters, Manish Dayal, and I’ve got to tell you, I really, really enjoyed it.
While there is romance and comedy in it (I was laughing a lot), there was so much more to the film! In fact, I enjoyed it so much that reading the book, on which it is based, is now on my list of things to do.
I loved that they show that food, something you probably don’t put to much thought into, can do so much for a family. Yes, we need to food to survive but not just in terms of getting essential nutrients for our body. Food has so much more power than that. Not only does it bring families together, for some it also ignites a passion that we may need to survive as well. Why you ask? Passion drives us to pursue our dreams and set out on a journey to achieve them.
In The Hundred-Foot Journey you get to see that pursuing your passion has its benefits but it also has its costs and that’s part of the journey. This movie definitely gives you a lot to think about and makes you laugh and feel good in the process. Finding out what is most important to you in life is one of the best journeys to set out on and sometimes the things you consider being a hurdle to overcome can be the best thing for you!
Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey teamed up for this movie so I’m not surprised that The Hundred-Foot Journey was so good! It’s a great family film and while I wouldn’t mind my 5 and 8 year old watching it, I think it may be over their heads (but at least I wouldn’t have to change the channel if it came on TV), I do think preteens and older would really enjoy it, so be sure to watch it when it is in theaters on 8/8.
Synopsis
In “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin-starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own escalate into a heated battle between the two establishments until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine — and for Madame Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) — combine with his mysteriously-delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Madame Mallory cannot ignore. At first Madame Mallory’s culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan’s gift as a chef and takes him under her wing.
