As you may or may not know, Today is Leap Day, 2/29 and it’s a pretty special day because it is only in the calendar every four years. An extra day is added to the calendar to keep it in sync with the earth’s revolutions around the sun (since it takes the earth a little more than 365 days to go around the sun).

Here are some Fun Facts about Leap Day & Leap Year:

  • Leap Years add a day to February in years evenly divisible by four.
  • Years that aren’t Leap Years are called Common Years.
  • Sundays that fall on the 29th of February only happen every 28 years.
  • The chances of having a leap year birthday are 1 in 1,461.
  • There are about 4 million people in the world who have been born on February 29th
  • Women are traditionally allowed and even encouraged to propose to men on Leap Year. (Remember the movie “Leap Year”)
  • In Greece it’s said to be unlucky for couples to marry during a Leap Year, and especially on Leap Day.
  • According to the Guinness Book of Records, there are world record holders both of a family producing three consecutive generations born on February 29 and of the number of children born on February 29 in the same family.
