Kajillionaire could have been a really cool heist movie but instead it left me feeling bad for the everyone involved.

Working as a team of three, Robert and Theresa, along with their daughter Old Dolio (yes you read that correctly), have made a career out of scamming and stealing from people. Unfortunately, they are in a bit of a jam when they have to devise another money making scheme and as a result, they bring someone new into the fold, Melanie. That shift in their dynamic brings about all sorts of changes.

Played by Evan Rachel Wood, Old Dolio unexpectedly finds herself on a path of self discovery along with the help of Melanie, played by Gina Rodriguez. I can say that each of these actors did a good job in their roles because they definitely made me feel some kind of way throughout the film. I’d like to believe that this film was meant to a comedy of some sort or maybe it was just artsy but that’s the problem, I am not sure. It was hard to find the humor in it all when it just made me feel so bad for Old Dolio.

I wish it would have been more of an Ocean’s Eleven type of heist film. Not only would that have added more excitement to the film but it would have also made it easier to process. Instead we got small time scams that, while creative, only hurt people and ultimately led to destroying their family. Although Old Dolio finds new beginnings, I feel there was more they could have done with the story. We do get a bit of closure but I was also left with some questions. One of which being, what’s the story between Melanie and her mom?

To be fair, Kajillionaire isn’t a movie that I would typically watch. However, in an effort to broaden my horizons, I wanted to give it a shot and while I don’t regret that decision, this movie really wasn’t for me. While it wasn’t my type of humor, I imagine that it would be funny to the right audience.

Kajillionaire is now in theaters.
