Imagine planning a summer vacation, preparing for it and then going off to enjoy it only to have one (or all) of your kids get sick. It is “no bueno” (not good). It happened to us earlier this year (a separate post on that coming up) and it was awful. Not only did it put a damper on our plans (that the kiddos were super excited about) but I hated to see my kids suffering. Plus, when you are traveling and out of your element, it becomes a much more stressful situation.
No matter where our travels take us, germs abound and before you know it, sick gets real. That’s why it is why it is important to have essentials on hand to get our little ones back to feeling better, no matter where your summer travels may take our families. When sick gets real, the pediatric brands of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare are there with three solutions – Children’s Advil®, Children’s Robitussin® and Children’s Dimetapp® – to tackle the ickiest of symptoms.

My kids did not get sick much while traveling, just colds really and that was easy to treat with ibuprofen and getting any meds while on the road.
we are going on a cruise for the end of summer, first time for my children, I dread the idea of sick becoming real!!!!but I hope they have fun!!
We went on a Road trip one summer and both my kids got sick. They threw up in the back seat and were sick for 3 days. Not a very fun start to our vacation!
We traveled from Ohio to North Carolina when my sons were small and my oldest got very sick and threw up all over our rental car.
Thanks, great tips!
I have 5 kids to deal with when they get sick and if one starts, I know the others follow right behind the first. I try to keep stocked up in various meds and catch it early when it does start.
we drive 15 hours to see relatives and luckily we havent experienced any sick moments but we have had headaches and tummy aches which luckily we keep stuff on hand in our car first aid kit.
one time we were at a water park and our daughter got severe cramps and started throwing up. we had to leave immediately.
When my son was little we went on a trip to Georgia and he ate something that made him sick. We ended up having to stop and get a room in some place that we didn’t even plan on visiting.
My son got sick and threw up in a car on a road trip
Yes, we were traveling to Niagara Falls when my daughter was two and she got sick in the backseat of the car. We had to pull over in New York and get the car cleaned. We spend the night there and got her some meds to help her feel better. The nest day she was fine and we continued on our way and had a great time.
Thank you!
My grandson started to not feel well while driving and he ended up throwing up in the car. I felt really bad for him.
My daughter usually has something go wrong while on vacation. One year she got sun poisoning, once she got bit by a jelly fish and so forth
Last year I was sick and couldn’t go to my in-laws 6 hrs away.
My niece once got bronchitis during a trip to Colorado. We spent most of the day in urgent care.
The first time we took my daughter out of the country she was only 5 months old. She got a horrible diaper rash that just wouldn’t clear up and a fever. It was so tough being in a country where I didn’t speak the language and trying to figure out what the right medicine to buy was. I will never travel again without some of my own medicine with us!
That is definitely hard
My biggest sick got real moment of travel was when we did a 19 hour drive from Delaware to Mississippi with three kids then aged 3,4,and 6. On the way down, one of them which was typically the best behaved one was complaining about the others touching him. We ended up fussing the whole ride down to knock it off. About 2 hours after arriving, the kids got a bath. He got out of the bath and was covered in chicken pox. That was a real sick got real trip.
poor thing!
I’m not sure any of us got sick on vacations. We got car sick, yes, but that was expected and planned for ahead of time. We got hurt a few times but used the first aid kit that was stocked with supplies at those times. 🙂
We took a beach trip years ago with all the kids. Our then six year old got sick the second day there. A bad virus so she and I just had a relaxing week. I felt so bad for her but the others did enjoy time with daddy!
We were foster parents for many years…and had our share of vacation emergencies. The most memorable was when our little 2 year old guy, who was always happy….took to screaming at the top of his lungs in the only fancy meal we had on the trip…headed to the emergency room where they found an ear infection and promptly treated it. My best advice is to take these events in stride and enjoy yourself anyway.
Last summer, my son caught a virus during a cruise. I had to purchase medication to help fight some of the symptoms, and it was not a fun experience for him!
Thanks for the chance to win!

well we were on a cruise last day in Nassau and I fell and broke my wrist I went back to the ship where they xrayed it and put it in a sling
I had to wait till the next day when we were back at port to go to hospital and have it xrayed again that was a Saturday then I had to wait till Monday to see doctor who put it in a cast
that is awful!
We had to get our carpet cleaned one time so we were out all day. My daughter got sick while we were out, had a fever, and ended up passing out. Needless to say we ended up in the ER and sick got real.
A week long beach trip turned out to be a caring for sick kids week. Thankfully they were better 3 days before the trip ended.
My son usually got sick on our summer road tips. We had to make our trips shorter and then we just stopped taking them.
Sick got real when my son vomited in the back seat of the car unexpectedly before ending up sick for a week so we were unprepared to say the least.
Went to visit our new grandson in NC. Hubby came down with a horrible cold the day before we left and was miserable the entire time. The first thing we did after getting the rental car was head straight to Walgreens for cold meds — I should have packed them.
We traveled to the Up of Michigan and both of my sons developed a nasty cold. It was a miserable trip.
Allergic reactions that resulted in trips to the ER, vomiting in restaurants, travelers diarrhea….I’ve seen it all!
Yikes!
Thanks for the contest! My 5 month old baby girl hasn’t been sick yet, but this would be great for the future.
We went on a cruise tip a few summers back, kids got sick on the trip and we had to spend most of time in the room.
My kids like to go to the beach and museums on our travels. My son got a cold a couple of summers again while we were away,
My child got sick while we were just sitting in the house he passed out
we went to six flags and my son got overheated and started to puke it was awful
I just remember the last time I was traveling with two of my grandkids and my granddaughter would always get car sick. I was prepared this time and kept plastic garbage bags in the magazine holder in the vehicle which really saved out long trip.
Sick got real when we were on our way up to the Dells.
My children are all grown up and out of the house. We did a lot of road trips so we always had water with us and Dramamine for car sickness.
So far the only thing we have experienced is some stomache problems, no colds, flus, or allergies, thankfully. We didn’t travel anywhere this summer. hope to go somewhere in October though.
It’s been a while since my family traveled. I’d like to take off to the beach.
when my son was two, we were traveling from the beach, and he got sick while in the car seat. ruining his clothing and the car seat. 🙁
We went on a long road trip and we left with one person being sick and arrived at our destination with three! :/
My daughter just got sick at grandmas and we had to go ack home to go to doctors
While traveling a couple of summer’s ago with my friend’s family, one of her son’s caught a stomach bug and passed it to her other two children. It definitely made for a not=so-fun trip, but a memory that will last forever.
My kids have never been sick on travels.
Amazing! Wish I could say the same
We traveled to Canada to see family and sick got real when my 5yr old Son got sick. Not only was the price of medicine outrageous, but you just cant seem to rest when you are not at home. Sadly it was a horrible vacation!
I have been lucky – no real summer sicknesses except headaches and sunburns. Thanks!
We all just got food poisoning in Paris 🙁
yikes!
My kids are grown and on their own now, but every time we decided to go on vacation, my daughter would get sick. I always packed cold, flu and allergy medicine.
We recently went to Cape Cod for three days and I was sick the first day, not the kids. I was miserable, but I sucked it up and laid on the beach anyway. I guess it could have been worse!
The only time anyone got sick while traveling was around 5 years ago as we were eating in a McDonalds in New Jersey one of my grandsons was complaining of a belly ache. Since he was running around in their Playland we didn’t pay much attention. We did when he started throwing up right at the table.
When I was a teenager my mother and I went on a spring break cruise, it was a surprise for my brithday, and we were having the best time for all of the first day. Then I got really sick, and although we assumed it was sea sickness it turned out to be food poisoning. I felt terrible the whole time, but I still remember the trip as being fun so it must not have been too bad. 🙂
oh no!!!!! Not the birthday cruise you expected…
One time we went to California and my oldest son was just little at the time. Every night he had croup and he and I got very little sleep!!
Leaving for a trip and one of the kids had a cough and cold. Bad timing.
We just took a road trip to Wisconsin had a great time but Kiera got sick on the way up a lot of car sleep and quite did the trick
I’d say we’ve been pretty lucky! Especially since we have 3 kids. We don’t travel often but when we do we’ve all been pretty healthy.
Years ago we took a 9 day RV trip from Indiana to California and my husband & I were so car/motion sickness it was so horrible. For at least 3 days it was nothing but throwing up and feeling bad. I think we damaged the trip for everyone because of it.
🙁
My kids used to get car sick bad – we had to keep towels and wet washclothes with us every trip we’d take.
We recently visited the beach and my daughter who has a compromised immune system was in extreme pain for almost 48-72 hours during our 5 day stay.
I am sorry that she went through that
We don’t travel much but last year we went to myrtle beach over spring break with extended family. I went with my three kids and my mom. My son did get a belly ache and I was not prepared. Next time I’ll pack a small first aid kit.
I would appreciate your precious gift , i hope i am the winner .
can’t think of any
The first time we took my youngest daughter to Las Vegas she got terribly blistered with huge green water blisters all over her back. She was burning up with fever and we had to change her shirt every 2 hours driving home for 2 days!
That is awful! Poor thing!
On a trip to Puerto Rico my cold developed into a full-blown sinus infection. The nearest pharmacy was miles away which cost me a fortune with a taxi and I had to rely on OTC Ned’s in 95 degree weather for a 5 day trip, it was terrible,
Oh no! Sorry to hear
When both your kids kid get sick at the same time. Sick just got real!!! 🙂 🙂
#Truth
We have been lucky, the only #WhenSickGetsReal problems we ever had were tummy aches.
We’ve been there when road trips get “too long’ and the rest stops start to happen more frequently. Flying can be hard too because of burst ear drums or being dehydrated.
We love to take a short 3 hour drive up to the waterparks of the Wisconsin Dells. Great summer traveling for the family and close enough to not go crazy!
we had just left for the beach and my LO got sick. we had to get off the interstate to clean up. it was a mess
Our daughter work up with one eye swollen on our vacation in May!! Benadryl and to the ER. Thank god it was fine by lunch time.
The kids really don’t usually get sick while we travel – just sometime they get carsick.
We were on a cross country trip, in an unfamiliar state, and my daughter’s eyes were bright pink. Of course, she had pink eye, which she had picked up traveling, but also a double ear infection! SIGH!
Sometimes I get scared while traveling because I’m afraid of getting sick. I just need food and then I’ll be happy!
Our daughter got sick on the way home.
First vacation ever and not used to traveling long distances in the car and we were heading from WV to TN and car sickness set in – This was a huge mess all over the back seat – #SickJustGotReal
So many great products. A few years ago my family and I went on a cruise. We could have been a little more prepared but we weren’t and my youngest got so sick (not sea sick) and it was awful for half of the trip!
We were on a family vacation to South Carolina and my son ended up with strep throat and had to go to ER
Once on a weekend trip 2 out of the three of us got food poisoning.
I got sick on our cruise so I could not enjoy the last couple days 🙁
Sick gets real when someone spreads it slowly to everyone in the house!
We had planned a great family getaway weekend at a water park. My son ended up sick. The trip ended with me staying in the hotel room with him and his dad and sisters got to enjoy the water park without us!
I’m so fortunate that my kids have never really gotten sick while traveling. BUT back in 2001 – before I found out I was pregnant with my son and when my daughter was just 2, we were set for a week-long vacation at the beach. And a week or two before, I came down with pneumonia! Worst time of my life! And fortunately, after being at the doctor’s every day for a week, she said I was well enough to travel…but that I shouldn’t really go down to the beach. I spent almost the whole week in bed and on the deck trying to recover!
When I was preggo and got the stomach flu on a car ride home…ugh!
We always get one sick child because we have to go through the mountains.
We were headed on our yearly trip to the beach. It’s about a 14 hour drive on average and we leave at night when I’m most awake but everyone else is asleep and less people on the road. About an hour into the trip my daughter wakes up from her slumber to throw up all over the back seat of the car. We had to scramble to find a place to go get her cleaned up and some meds to make her stomach calm down.
