This version of The Secret Garden has a darker tone but keeps all of the beauty and wonder of its predecessors….and that was intentional.

the secret garden

As a child I remember watching The Secret Garden and being amazed by its beauty. I can’t say that I remembered much else other than the fact that a child had discovered a secret garden and that it had changed their life forever but the fact that I remembered that much says a lot about how much I enjoyed it. If you saw that same film as a child, don’t expect this adaptation of the film to have that same feel, well at least not initially.

The movie starts off with a dark tone. You have a child on her own after the death of her parents in search of food. She also finds herself in a home with an uncle she hardly knows and who isn’t even very welcoming because he has his own issues to deal with. I could go on but why ruin the movie for you. Eventually, she discovers the secret garden and makes some friends along the way and as a result her life is ultimately changed.

While the movie does drag a bit at the beginning, it does pick up and the secret garden is absolutely beautiful! They did such a great job with it, it is visually stunning. We also found it interesting to see how the garden reacted to people’s emotions and how it brought about healing.

Given the depth of each character and the pain they were dealing with, each actor did a really nice job with their character. I actually had the opportunity to interview two of them earlier this week. I chatted with Dixie Egerickx and Edan Hayhurst about how this role has changed them, what their secret garden would have if they ever discovered one and more. You can check out this short interview below.
