Looking to travel, but you’re on a tight budget? Fear not! Here are 7 ways to help you Save Money When You Travel:
#1 Plan. Or be flexible. If you plan everything out months in advance, you should be able to get airline tickets for much less than if you buy a few weeks before your trip. However, if your travel dates are flexible, you can wait until the last minute and try to snag a super discounted ticket.
#2 Plan some more. If you’re traveling by car, plan out your meals – packs as many snacks and drinks as you possibly can. This can save upwards of $50 a day for a family of 4. If you’re going to eat out, do so at breakfast or lunch time as prices are cheaper at those times of day.
#3 Cook something. On that same note, if you’re staying at a hotel for several days (or even a weekend!), stop at the nearest grocery store and get a few essentials. Even if you have to eat hot dogs or sandwiches, you’ll be saving so much you won’t mind!
#4 Pack light! Flying? Check the airline you’re traveling with to see how many bags are allowed for free. Luggage expenses add up quickly.
#5 Bundle up. Check online deal sites for bundles on flights, cars, and hotels. Sometimes, it is just as cheap to get a bundle as it is to get one airline ticket. Be careful, though – some sites will hike the “original” prices up to make you think you’re saving big when you’re really not. Don’t get ripped off!
#6Take the Red Eye. If you can, fly mid-week and/or in the middle of the night. Both of these will save you a few bucks – and that adds up!
#7 Free is best! While planning your trip, read up on free things to do in the city you’re visiting. Google “free things to do in ____” and see what comes up. Plan your day(s) out around the free/inexpensive things to do in each city. Free doesn’t mean boring – have a blast!
