There’s a lot that goes into creating an animated film: Layout & Lighting, Design and so much more! As part of the animation process, the animators participate in Dailies. They do it daily, hence the name “dailies” and it basically involves the animators sitting down with the director(s) in a theater so that they can show the work they have done on screen, make comments, suggestions and any necessary adjustments (even if they are minor ones like moving an eyebrow slightly higher) to what they have so far.
While in San Fransisco, I was also able to chat with Supervising Animators Shawn Krause & Victor Navone along with Jamie Roe, Tony Fucile who explained the Dailies process to us. Here’s what they shared about Dailies and Inside Out:
Dailies
- The Dailies run about an hour
- They can work on about 20 shots within that hour
- Animators who have work to be seen sign up to participate
- It’s a collaborative environment
- Good ideas come from anywhere & anyone…the best idea wins!
Inside Out
- They had a crew of 45 animators working on the film at its peak
- Animators sometimes use mirrors to figure out expressions
- Animators also watch actors doing the scene or watch them in other roles for inspiration
- Animators get assigned a character and scene to work on
- Animators may work on 3 seconds of a scene within a week.
I love that I was able to go behind the scenes ad learn more about the film! I can’t wait to see the movie Inside Out when it opens in theaters on 6/19!
Inside Out Official Synopsis:
Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.
