Ham is a popular holiday main course, but why should it cease when the holidays are over? Ham could be and should be enjoyed throughout the year. The key is remembering to keep the hambone once you have devoured the ham. Because if you do, you can make this Hearty Split Pea and Ham Soup Recipe.
The meatier the hambone, the more flavor and heartier your soup will be. Cuddle up with a blanket or crackling fire, toss your feet up, and enjoy!
Ingredients
- 1 medium sweet onion, chopped
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 20 oz. bag dried split peas
- 1 meaty hambone
- 6 cups chicken broth
- 6 cups water
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- Begin by adding the olive oil and onions to a large stockpot and cook over medium heat until the onions are translucent.
- Place the hambone in the pot (it will probably sit at an angle) and add the peas, chicken broth, and water.
- Cover and bring to a boil.
- Continue to boil for 30 minutes then remove the lid slightly to allow steam to escape.
- Stir occasionally.
- Simmer for an additional 30 minutes.
- The peas will soften into the liquid and a majority of the ham will fall off of the bone.
- Add pepper and salt if necessary, but keep in mind the ham will provide it’s own saltiness to this soup.
* Makes about 3 quarts.
If you’re at a friend or relative’s home and they aren’t going to save it, there’s no shame in volunteering to take it off their hands. Just think of this delicious, and warm soup you will be able to make in the comfort of your own home.

That sounds really good. I haven’t had ham & pea soup in quite a while. It is a good way to use up leftovers.
Love a good split pea and ham soup! Will definitely have to remember this one for the winter. Thanks for sharing!
This is one of my favorite soups ever! The recipe is so simple, just as you posted. Every now and then we’ll add some carrots or other veggie, but I think it’s best as you posted.
Adding carrots would be yummy…I love carrots in soup
I like this kind of soup. I have a problem today with being by the roaring fire – supposed to be 95 degrees today.
yikes! If we waited to eat soup on cold days here in Florida, we’d barely eat it, LOL.
My French Canadian mother certainly would agree with you that this soup isn’t just for the holidays. She made it for us often. Your recipe looks great!

I love split pea soup. We had Ham for Mother’s Day and I made split pea soup a couple of days later. My son has decided he wants to be vegetarian, so I made him a ham free split pea and it wasn’t bad. Thanks for sharing.

Split pea and ham is my fav soup of all time and this recipe makes it so simple to do. Thanks!!
I just noticed one thing you forgot to put on the recipe…people that cook peas will already know to do it but beginners will not….they need to know to pick thru the peas to get out the rocks and/or chunks of mud and then they need to rinse them before cooking them. =)
Thanks Kellie – I’ll add that to the recipe. I appreciate you telling me 🙂
You are so very welcome. I’d hate to think of someone biting down on one of those rocks…ouchie!!
That would be pretty bad!
This is hard to think about on such a hot day, but it sounds delicious! I’ll have to save this one for the fall!
Thank you for sharing your soup recipe with us! I love split pea soup.
Ham and pea soup is pretty good. It’s a bit rich to eat very often. It does hit the spot on a chilly day though.
One of my favorite soups. I like to add potatoes and carrots in for even more flavor and texture.
oh boy I haven’t had this soup in ages!!! I love that it doesn’t take that long, and a nice soup like this on a rainy dark day is perfect comfort food even in summer!
There is a chill in the air today. This would be great.
