After watching The Book of Life, the kiddos and I had a better understanding of The Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos, and its significance. Day of the Dead is a holiday that celebrates the lives of deceased loved ones with festivities that honor those who have passed. It is a fun and thoughtful way to honor loved ones and have them still be a part of your life.
Here are some easy The Book of Life inspired Day of the Dead Party Tips for you…
Invitations
*Consider sending out colorful skull-shaped invitations or invitations that resemble a tombstone (You can purchase them or even have the kiddos create them). Online invitations work as well.
Decorations
*Of course your decorations can be homemade or store bought (I happen to find mine on sale) or you can incorporate a combination of the two.
*Incorporate Marigolds, Los flores de muertos, because they are a traditional part of the Holiday decor.
Food and Drinks
*I am all about serving finger foods to keep it simple but incorporating traditional foods.
*Traditionally, the favorite foods of the deceased family members are served along with Pan de Muertos.
Party Fun
*Have the kiddos create and/or decorate their own skulls or skeleton masks.
*The adults can create a keepsake using a deceased family member’s photo, like an ornament or a photo frame.
*Watch The Book of Life as a family
*Written and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez and produced by Guillermo del Toro, the characters in The Book of Life venture to the Land of the Remembered and embrace the rich culture and family history brought to life by the all-star voice cast of Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna, Ron Perlman, Kate del Castillo, Christina Applegate and Ice Cube.
The Book of Life can be purchased in stores or online.
Do you celebrate Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos)? If so, how do you and your family celebrate it? Do you have a Day of the Dead party?
Sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to celebrate the dead. My grandson is making a shrine for his great grandma for the Day of the Dead for a school project. It’s for his Spanish class.
This is such a great idea and I really enjoyed the movie.
