Looking for a feel good movie with some cool music that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home? If so, check out The High Note.

Despite some of the story line being predictable, seeing 2 women trying to find their voice is inspiring. Yes, I recognized that it is just a movie but I was reminded that fighting for your dream means doing whatever needs to get done to make it happen. It may not be easy but it is definitely worth it.

All in all, I really did enjoy the film and the chemistry between the cast. Given that they are quite talented, I found that with their talents combined, The High Note was entertaining…

Dakota Johnson plays Maggie Sherwood, Grace’s assistant, who loves music and wants her shot at being a producer. I know the movie follows her story and focuses on her journey but I found that her character was overshadowed by some of the other cast.

Tracee Ellis Ross plays Grace Davis, a superstar who acts like the diva she knows she is. I loved seeing her in this role because it just seems so unlike her, yet she played it so well. I can imagine that she had fun with this character, I know I would have.

Ice Cube plays Jack Robertson, Grace’s agent. No surprise that he did a great job of being the kind of guy that tells it like it is no matter who you are. He plays these types of roles so well and this character was no exception. I think it comes naturally to him and I mean that as a compliment.

For a movie that is about the life of a singer, well at least part of it is anyways, I expected Tracee Ellis Ross to sing more in the movie. While I did enjoy the one song she sang, the one who really stood out for some amazing singing was Kelvin Harrison Jr. (David Cliff). He has an amazing voice!

I also liked the chemistry between Maggie and David. There was something about it that worked. Speaking of things that I enjoyed, while they didn’t have major roles in the film, Zoe Chao (Katie Davis and June Diane Raphael (Gloria) were really funny! They made what they said count and that made me laugh.

Is this movie appropriate for kids? Nope. There is sexual content and inappropriate language but I do think it is a good movie for you to enjoy with friends or on your own.

Set in the dazzling world of the LA music scene comes the story of Grace Davis, a superstar whose talent, and ego, have reached unbelievable heights. Maggie is Grace’s overworked personal assistant who’s stuck running errands, but still aspires to her childhood dream of becoming a music producer. When Grace’s manager presents her with a choice that could alter the course of her career, Maggie and Grace come up with a plan that could change their lives forever.
