I was excited when I found out I would be interviewing Cobie Smulders, who plays “Maria Hill” in the movie Marvel’s The Avengers. (You can see her pic below)
Not only because of her role as a strong, female character in this film, also because every Monday I tune in to watch the show “How I Met Your Mother” and she s one of its main characters, “Robin”. (Pic Below)
We had just finished our interview with Tom Hiddleson (You can read about his interview HERE), so I was pumped about our interview with her. So Cobie walks in to the room and I was amazed at how strikingly beautiful she was (and her dress was amazing).
Here’s what Cobie had to say…
What’s it like being one of the very few women in this movie?
I think “It’s been really cool that Marvel is bringing in these strong females and especially with Maria Hill, it’s really cool to see a strong female that’s in a commanding position…”
Did you do special training for this?
I did some weapons training because “…the most important thing for me was getting comfortable around guns. Because I’ve kind of feared them my entire life and I’ve never shot a real gun… it helped me get a lot more comfortable…”
What was your most memorable moment while filming?

“…There are so many. Every single shot was really so big, you know? and so new too. Not just for me but for everyone…”
She also mentioned meeting all of her fellow actors for the first time at the round table, she said she was really quiet and timid, she referred to it as a “cool moment” and went on to say that “it was filled with those kind of moments, because we shot in amazing locations”.
How did you feel that you’re going to be a role model for all these little girls?
“That’s an amazing thought, I don’t think I’ve let myself go there, but it’s a wonderful idea…I have a daughter, she’ll be three…it’s going to be cool for her hopefully, to see me (well when she gets a lot older) in an action role… If I can empower any girls anywhere, I’m happy to do it.”
Did you read comics when you were younger?
“…the only comics I really had were like Archie comics, you know. And I was really obsessed with Archie comics…” but they (referring to comics) weren’t really around in my life…
My fiancé who’s waiting patiently outside for me is huge into comic books and like grew up reading all this stuff and watching the cartoons, so he’s… sort of helped transition me…”
Did you have any inspiration in creating your character?
“…I scoured the internet for like hard copies of the comics that she was involved in, which was a series that she had. And there was this one comic that… I actually cut out and had with me…it was sort of a fade away and it was Maria at different ages…” This comic showed Maria as a teenager with a split lip showing someone yelling at her, then you see her as young officer, in the army and then in S.H.I.E.L.D. This “helped me keep in mind where this woman had been and how much it’s taken for her to get to where she is and how hard that has been. And also, you know, she can maintain that sort of strength that she had. That helped me a lot.”
On Maria Hill’s Relationship with Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson)
Maria Hill and Nick Fury have an interesting relationship. “At the beginning she’s very hard and then she kind of softens… she starts to see things “…from his perspective… I think that because she has such a military upbringing and she is so by the book, it certainly works well with Fury because she keeps him in check.”
Did you do the happy dance when you got the part?
“I had called him (her fiancé) and we … had like a moment together. But yeah, I’m Canadian, we don’t do, do happy dancing. (Of course we all laughed)
Will you be doing more action movies with each other?
“… I really enjoyed it, really enjoyed the training and I felt like I didn’t get to do enough and I would love to do more… I hope to go on and do more of these Marvel films… it would be cool to take on more, yeah.”
Cobie was so sweet…It’s one thing to see them on TV but it is completely different when they are sitting right next you and engaging in conversation. It’s interesting because we put these ideas into our head about celebrities based on their work or something we may have read but it’s great to see first hand that they are regular people, just like us. (who would have thunk it!)
