I had the chance to take the family (including my hubby) to see “Brave” in 3D on Tuesday Evening before its release tomorrow Friday, 6/22. Once we saw the previews for the movie, I knew we would be watching it. Not only did it look like a cool film but the fact the the main heroine of this film is a female really peaked my interest because it is a nice change of pace.
I assumed the film was simply a story about how Merida proved to her parents and her kingdom that as a princess she could do more than simply unite kingdoms by being a good wife and future queen. Little did I know that the movie was really centered on the relationship between a mother and daughter and their quest to mend their rocky relationship (who would have thought that a teenage girl and her mother would have issues…LOL). On the other hand, Merida’s relationship with her dad is pretty cool, you can tell they get each other and click so well which probably makes it more difficult for her mom. Although they are torn apart by differences in personality, the love that binds them sets them on a path of understanding and healing. Let’s just say that my eyes were watery and I wanted to call my mom and tell her that I love her.

While it is a kids movie there may be some scenes that you may or may not want your child to see. For example, there is a part where you can see the back sides of the men when their kilts are needed elsewhere. Also, there are some bear fighting scenes that may be a little scary for the younger ones. But…there is no inappropriate language which I always appreciate. As I have said in the past and will continue to say, you know your child best, know what your child can handle and what you want them exposed too. All I want to do is give you the 411 on what to expect.
Last but not least, if you don’t mind waiting quite a bit for the credits to finish, there is an extra (and short) film scene.
Synopsis:
“Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida, a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her skills and resources – including her clever and mischievous triplet brothers – to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late, discovering the meaning of true bravery.
