The last time I was in LA, I had the chance do some really cool things, one of which was to tour the set of ABC’s show, The Middle.

The Middle Set Visit - Living Room

While I on the set (you can read about my visit here), Atticus Shaffer stopped by for a quick visit and was kind enough to take a selfie with me.

Atticus Shaffer and Leanette Fernandez

There wasn’t a lot of time to chat with him that day but this past Monday we were able to chat about the Season Finale airing this evening.

Here’s what Atticus had to say…

Why should we tune into the season finale?

This is the first time that we’ve gone on vacation to a real big location for a season finale. The Hecks being able to go to Disney World was fantastic, it was so much fun to actually film. You’ve only seen the Hecks go on vacation once or twice and it was only tidbits within the episode and it was mostly them traveling there. For this, you actually see them there and experiencing their vacation being the regular middle family that they are and going through the trouble that they get into but having a good time.

What was your most memorable moment while filming the season finale?

Disney couldn’t shut down the park for filming. Plus, we wanted to have that realness factor…so when we were there we were filming in the middle of real people all around us. To be able to have all the people that love the show around us was absolutely hilarious to see because they couldn’t believe it. They were shocked that we were there filming. So, they pay money to come to Disney and they would just stand there to watch us work. I just thought it was so cool because it was kind of the first time we had a live audience. It was awesome to be able to meet all the people, shake their hands, say hi and take pictures because I got to interact with the people who watch the show. I love getting that kind of energy especially when you’re working because it pumps you up because you’re doing it for them.

What was you favorite Disney experience while there?

we went to Epcot and it was fun because I felt like we were visiting different countries while not having to leave the country. I thought it was really cool to walk around there, that was a blast.

In what ways are you like your character, Brick?

I would have to say the biggest one is that I follow the beat of my own drum and that’s what Brick does. He doesn’t need to be with what’s popular or what’s cool at the time. What’s cool is what cool to him. He has his own interest and he likes to explore them.

My mom and my dad always told me to be true to myself, to be myself and to be the way I’m supposed to be because we’re all meant to be different and unique. That’s what’s really cool about Brick because he is unique and he is showing that it is cool to be unique and that you’re supposed to be unique.

Brick wants to make a stop in North Carolina to meet his online girlfriend…is it love?

I think that for Brick it is. Brick is always going to be Brick and how he handles his emotions are always going to be Brick but the best part about it is that this is someone he feels is someone that he has connected to and someone he has feelings for… I think it’s cool that they are expanding him in that way.

How do you feel about being a role model?

That’s something that’s really big for me. I get a lot of people who talk to me on Racebook or in real life and they say you are my son, my daughter, my brother, you are my role model…I am so incredibly honored that I can be a good role model for all of these people. I think that’s fantastic and I think there should be more of that out there because it shows all the good values you need to have. I think it’s awesome that I can be a part of that.

Do you have a message for all your fans?

If I had people in front of me and I had a message for them it would be stay true to yourself. You do not need to change the way you look, the way you act, the way you think or any of that. You are meant to be unique. How you were born, in that uniqueness…is how you need to remain and you don’t want to put yourself down because of what others say to you, you need to be yourself.

What’s next for you?

I’d love to write. I have gotten into writing a lot more in this past year. That’s what I’d like to do once this show is over. I’d like too kind of move behind the camera and start directing and writing.

Don’t forget to tune in to the season finale of The Middle tonight on ABC at 8|7c
