After learning more about what happens behind the scenes in Wreck-It Ralph we had the chance to eat Chinese food and meet Tony and Tom Bancroft, twins brothers who worked on the movie Mulan (Since Mulan is celebrating its 15th Anniversary). Tony was the Director of Mulan and Tom was an animator for Mulan and created Mushu, the funny dragon who is Mulan’s guardian.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from our conversation with them, I figured it would be a lot of technical stuff I would have to pretend to understand but it wasn’t like that at all! They were both so funny and I enjoyed hearing them talk about the Mulan. They are quite talented and you can tell that they work very well together and have fun in the process. They’re parents must be proud!
Here are 5 fun facts I learned about the movie Mulan:
- There is a Hidden Mickey in the scene where Mulan first meets Mushu (When Mushu stomps, the hooves make a Mickey on the ground).
- Tom wanted Mushu to be purple and while he ended up being red they did make it so that the tip of Mushu’s tail is purple in the scene where they are being pulled up from hanging on the side the cliff.
- The fireworks attendants bare a likenesses to the directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook
- The spots on Shang’s horse’s (on his neck and rear end) are shaped like Mickey
- They had also originally considered Richard Dreyfus for the voice of Mushu (Eddie Murphy ended up doing it)
Not only did they talk to us about how they came up with the concept of Mushu in Mulan and about the 5 fun facts I listed above, they also drew some of it’s characters in the process and while they made it look super easy…there’s no way I could do it. You can check out Tom in action as he draws Mushu in the video below.
They even surprised us all by drawing each one of us (25 Mommy Bloggers) a Mulan drawing and each one is different.
