The Little Mermaid is by far my favorite Disney animated film! There isn’t a song I don’t sing along to and even today, it brings a smile to my face every time I watch it. That being said, getting the chance to meet and chat with Mark Henn, the animator and creator of Ariel’s character, was a special treat.
Fun fact: His work includes Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, Young Simba in The Lion King and the title character in Mulan.
Not only were we able to pick his brain about the creation of the character but we also got to see him draw her by hand, which is something he said he hadn’t done in many years. Seeing him bring Ariel’s character to life with paper and pencil was unbelievable.
Fun fact: Henn has been working for Disney for 38 years and even though animation has evolved, so has he and still mentors others when hand animation is needed.
Has it really been 30 years since the release of The Little Mermaid? While I can’t believe that it has been that long (because I refuse to believe I am that old), I am so excited that it is diving into the Walt Disney Signature Collection on Digital, 4K Ultra HD and Movies Anywhere on Feb. 12 and 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray™ on Feb. 26th.
Given his immense talent and being the creators of some of my favorite Disney characters, it was a true honor getting the chance to talk to him and see him in action!
